Mr. Eikens holds two master's degrees, one in paper technology (technical university of darmstadt, Germany), another in industrial engineering (Georgia institute of technology, USA), and a doctorate in chemical engineering from Colorado state university, USA. In addition, Mr. Bernd Eikens is a member of the board of directors of the European printing paper producers association and the German pulp and paper association, as well as of John bont construction & amp; Member of the board of directors of Co. KG.

Following his appointment, Mr Bernd Eikens was interviewed to brief on his own experience and the work being done by UPM Asia paper.

Congratulations to you! Could you introduce yourself briefly? My career at UPM began in 1998 when I joined UPM Nordland paper mill. Between 2002 and 2005, I held various positions from production engineer to paper mill manager. From 2005 to the end of 2008, I worked in UPM's north American business division, where I was responsible for the production and sales of printing paper. In 2008, UPM restructured and established the paper division, and I became the head of the supply chain, based in Helsinki. Since 2013, I have been responsible for UPM's European and north American paper management team, based in augsburg. I have been married for 19 years and my wife Sabine and I have two sons, Henning and Lennart.

You are currently in charge of UPM's largest business unit. Now you are going to head up the Asian paper division. What are your expectations? In what areas do you find challenging and competitive?

Firstly, with many changes, I will face a series of new things: different cultures and lifestyles, different markets, different customer groups with different business habits and behaviors. In order to create more value for the management of the Asian paper industry, I would like to meet many of our employees and customers. It is too early for me to talk about the specific challenges of Asia's two big businesses: label materials and cultural paper. Obviously, the biggest challenge is how to successfully bring our new paper machine to market. I hope I can quickly grasp the overall situation and understand where we are and where we need to be.

You have a long career at UPM. Are you familiar with Asia before? Or labels, packaging and specialty paper? Do you understand the business environment, customers, competition, ranks, divisions and employees in Asia? When I was managing the supply chain team, I had some contact with teams and markets in Asia. I have worked with supply chain teams in Asia. In addition, I also know some former colleagues in the paper business. In terms of products, I started my career in culture paper, which helped me. So far, I have had little contact with clients in Asia.

You will take office on February 1, 2016. What are you doing before that? I plan to go to Shanghai in January to meet with all the members of the management. I hope to work with them to prepare for my phase of familiarity. Obviously, all aspects of this career change need to be considered, such as finding a place to live and moving my belongings from augsburg to Shanghai.

Can you share your feelings about UPM Europe and North America and your time in augsburg? I really enjoyed the last two years. A lot has happened during this period, starting with the move to augsburg and the establishment of a new business structure focused on the challenging market environment. Despite all the challenges, we have an excellent management team with great team spirit. Augsburg is a great city and I hope the local football club FCA can do better!

What made you make this choice? Professionally, I am willing to take on new challenges, be prepared for changes, and strive to be a trusted partner to my colleagues and stakeholders. I value open and honest communication, and I want to be empowered and empowered.
